License Types in India
Driving licence in India is mainly classified into two types:
🎯 This is a temporary license, which is given to new drivers for practice. It is valid for six months and can be extended for an additional six months if required.
✅ This is a permanent license. You can apply for a permanent license 30 days after the learner's license and within 6 months. Which gives you full permission to drive independently.
Eligibility Criteria
🔍 The following are the eligibility criteria to obtain a driving license (DL) in India:
- 🎂 Age Requirement: For non-geared motorcycles - scooty/moped (up to 50CC) you must be at least 16 years of age. For geared motorcycles or cars your minimum age is 18 years and for commercial license applicants must be at least 20 years of age.
- 🏥 Medical Fitness: Must satisfy physical and mental fitness standards prescribed by the Motor Vehicles Act such as eye test (vision test), blood pressure/sugar level, physical disability (if any).

Driving Licence Application
Applying for a Driving License (DL) online in India is a simple process. You can do it through the official website of the RTO (Regional Transport Office) or Parivahan Sewa portal. To apply for a driving license, follow the following steps given below –
Step 1: Visit the official website:
- To apply for Driving Licence online, you have to visit the official website of Sarathi Parivahan – parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page under the “Online Services” section you have to select Driving License Related Services .

Step 2: Select your state:
- After this you will get the option to choose the state, you will have to select your state.
- After this, the following options will appear in front of you-
Apply for Learner Licence :- If you are applying for a license for the first time.
Apply for Driving Licence :- If you already have a Learner’s Licence and want to apply for a Permanent Licence.

Step 3 : Apply for Learner's License / Permanent DL:
- If you are applying for the license for the first time then you have to click on “Apply for Learner Licence” .
- After this a new page will open, which will contain details about how many steps the form will be completed in.
- After this, follow all the prompts by clicking on the “ Continue ” option.
Step 4 : Fill the form:
- After this the application form will open in front of you and you have to carefully enter all your information like - name, address, date of birth, type of vehicle (motorcycle/car/HMV) etc.
Step 5 : Upload Documents:
- After this you have to upload the required documents in the specified format and size, which are given below -
- Aadhaar Card / PAN Card
- Address proof (Electricity bill, Passport)
- Passport size photo
- Signature Scan
- Age proof (10th mark sheet, birth certificate)
Step 6 : Book a Slot (for Learner's Test):
- Once the application is complete you have to select a convenient date and time slot to schedule the driving test through the Appointment section.
Step 7 : Pay fees online:
- After this you have to make the payment using one of the available online payment methods.
- After payment, you will get a receipt, which you have to download or print.
Step 8 : Get Driving License :
After passing the test, the DL is sent to your address in 2-3 weeks. If you want, you can collect the license at your RTO on the scheduled date with the original documents and payment receipt.
Driving Licence Status
If you have also applied for driving license through Parivahan Sewa portal then you can check the status of your application by following this procedure:
- To Driving Licence Status , you have to visit the official website of Sarathi Parivahan parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page of the official website, under the “Online Services” section, you have to select Driving License Related Services .
- After this you will have to select your state from the dropdown.
- After this, you will see many options in which you will have to click on the “Application Status” option in the menu above.
- After this you have to enter your application number, date of birth and the displayed captcha to check the current status of your driving license .
- In this way you can check the status of your driving license. If you have got your Driving Licence renewed, then you can check your Renewal Status with the help of this process.

Note :- If you apply for a learning license, it will be issued on the same day, so you can start learning to drive immediately. To get a driving license, you have to complete a driving test and only after successfully passing it, your permanent license will be issued.
Driving License Download
If you have applied for a driving license or you already have a driving license then you can Driving License Download through the Parivahan Sewa portal by following the procedure given below-
- To Download Driving License, you have to visit the official website of Sarathi Parivahan parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page, under the “Online Services ” section, you have to select Driving License Related Services .
- After this you will have to select your state from the dropdown.
- You have to click on “Print Driving License” in the Driving License menu.
- After this you will come to a new page where you have to enter your DL application number and date of birth and click on submit.
- After this you will see the option "DL Print" .
- You can print or download the driving license in PDF format by clicking on this option

For Learner's License:-
- On the same Sarathi dashboard, an option “Print Learner’s License (Form-3)” will appear under the “Learner’s License” menu
- You have to choose that option.
- After this you will come to a new page where you have to enter your application/license number, mobile number and date of birth and click on submit.
- After this you will see the option "DL Print" .
- You can print or download the Learner's License in PDF format by clicking on this option

Driving Licence Renewal
If you also want to renew your driving license through the Parivahan Sewa portal, then you can apply one month before the expiry of your driving license. For which you have to follow the following steps –
- To apply for Driving Licence Renewal online, you have to visit the official website of Sarathi Parivahan – parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page under the “Online Services” section you have to select Driving License Related Services .
Step 2: Select your state:
- After this you will get the option to choose the state, you will have to select your state.
- After this a new page will open, which will contain details about how many steps the form will be completed in.
- After this, follow all the prompts by clicking on the “ Continue ” option.
Step 3: Select Apply for DL Renewal option:
- After this you will come to a new page where you will see many services in which you will have to click on “Renewal of Driving Licence” .

Step 4 : Fill the form:
- After this the application form will open in front of you and you have to carefully enter all your information like driving license number, date of birth and captcha code.
- After this you click on “Get DL Details” .
- You will then need to proceed with the renewal process by clicking on the “Proceed” button

Step 5 : Upload Documents:
- After this you have to upload the required documents in the specified format and size, which are given below -
- Passport size photo
- Form-9 (Renewal Application Form)
- Old Driving License (Original + Copy)

Step 6 : Pay fees online:
- After this you have to make the payment using one of the available online payment methods.
- After payment, you will get a receipt, which you have to download or print.
Step 7 : Get new DL:
- After this, the new DL is sent to your address by post in 5-7 days. If you want, you can get your license on DigiLocker.

Note :- You can apply for driving license renewal up to one month before its expiry. If the renewal is delayed for more than five years, you will have to follow the application process for a new license. If the application is made within 30 days of expiry, the renewal will be effective from the original date. Then you will have to pay an additional fee of Rs 30/- and the application will be valid from the date of application.
Duplicate Driving Licence
If your driving license (DL) is lost, stolen or damaged, you can apply for a duplicate DL online. For this you have to follow all the procedures given below -
- To apply for Duplicate Driving Licence online, you have to visit the official website of Sarathi Parivahan – parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page under the “Online Services” section you have to select Driving License Related Services .
Step 2: Select your state:
- After this you will get the option to choose the state, you will have to select your state.
- After this a new page will open, which will contain details about how many steps the form will be completed in.
- After this, follow all the prompts by clicking on the “ Continue ” option.
Step 3: Select the option "Duplicate DL" :
- After this you will come to a new page where you will see many services in which you will have to click on "Apply for Duplicate Driving Licence" .

Step 4 : Fill the form:
- After this the application form will open in front of you and you have to carefully enter all your information like driving license number, date of birth and captcha code.
- After this you click on “Get DL Details”.
- After this, to confirm, you will have to enter your mobile number, email ID, your address and PIN code.
- After this, you have to select the option “Issue of Duplicate DL” or “Replacement of DL” and click on “Proceed” .

Step 5 : Upload Documents:
- After this you have to upload the required documents in the specified format and size, which are given below -
- FIR – If the DL is stolen.
- Age Certificate (Aadhaar, PAN Card, Passport)

Step 6 : Book a Slot :
- After completing the application, you have to select the date and time slot through the appointment section. On that day you have to take all your documents to the RTO

- First of all you have to visit the official website of Parivahan Sewa – – parivahan.gov.in .
- On the home page under “Online Services ” section you need to select Vehicle Related Services .
- After this you will have to select your state from the dropdown.
- Now your Vehicle Citizen Service page will open, after this you have to enter your vehicle registration number, registration authority, state name and RTO.
- Finally, you have to click on the Proceed option to continue.
- After this, you can avail all the vehicle related services online, so that you will not need to go to RTO again and again.


e Challan - Check and Payment
E-Challan is a digital challan which is issued by the police or transport department for violating traffic rules. The fine can be paid online or offline.
Step 1: Visit the official website :
- To check and make payment of e Challan, you will have to visit the official website of e-Challan –https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/.
- In the menu section above the e-challan home page, you will see the option “Pay Online”, you have to click on it.
- After this, a new page will open for you to fill in the challan details. As shown in the screenshot above .

Step 2: Enter the Challan details :
- You will then need to enter one of the following information:
- Challan Number (14 digits)
- Vehicle Registration Number
- Driving licence number
- After this, enter the captcha code below and click on Get Detail .
- After this you have to complete your mobile verification with the help of OTP.
- After verification, a “Confirmation of e Challan” page will appear in front of you.
Step 3: Get Challan Details :

After this, all your pending challans will be visible. For each
challan, the following information will be available-
- Invoice Date
- Type of violation
- Penalty Amount
- payment status
Step 4: Payment Process :
- After this, to pay your challan, you will see the “ Proceed With Net-Payment ” button, you have to click on it .
- You will see many options for e-challan payment, you can complete your e-challan payment by selecting the option that suits you.
- After making the payment you have to download the receipt by clicking on "Print Receipt" option.
