Age Criteria by Vehicle Class

Minimum Age Required for DL

Vehicle Category Minimum Age Conditions
Motorcycle Without Gear (MCWOG) 16 Years Engine capacity must not exceed 50cc. Written consent from parents/guardians is mandatory.
Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) 18 Years Applies to all private cars, jeeps, and motorcycles with gear (MCWG).
Commercial / Transport Vehicles 20 Years For driving heavy goods/passenger vehicles. Some states require holding an LMV licence for at least 1 year prior.

Beyond Age: What Else Do You Need?

  • Medical Fitness: Applicants under 40 applying for private non-transport vehicles only need to submit a self-declaration (Form 1). However, applicants for commercial vehicles, or anyone above 40, must submit a registered doctor's Medical Certificate (Form 1A).
  • Educational Qualification: As per recent amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, the mandatory requirement of passing 8th standard to obtain a commercial driving licence has been removed. However, the driver must be able to read traffic signs and have basic literacy.
